ALFIE
Hello. My name is Alfie Dellon, and I am a vampire. Maybe you’ve heard of me. Maybe not.
You probably think you know what it means to be a vampire. Reality is, after they’re turned, most vampires don’t make it past their first year. Even fewer make it past their first ten. Life forever in the shadows, your continued existence dependent on the suffering of others. Our chances of survival are bleak, and there are those who would say that is a good thing. Even some vampires. But we could live as long as we wanted, if we could just step out into the light.
NEIGE
Eh, I would not advise it.
ALFIE
Neige.
NEIGE
What? I cannot sit here and listen to you give them bad advice.
ALFIE
I meant it metaphorically.
NEIGE
Perhaps use a different metaphor, then? You can’t be telling people to go out into the sun when you know it will hurt them.
ALFIE
I never said anything about the sun!
NEIGE
Even so, I maintain you need to work on your phrasing. How many times have you revised this script, mon raleur? How has this not occurred to you?
ALFIE
If you think you’d do a better job, by all means, go ahead!
NEIGE
Oui, d’accord. Bonjour, je suis Alfie Dellon, and I love to suck—
ALFIE
Do it properly!
NEIGE
Ugh.
ALFIE
If you’re going to use your own words, own them
NEIGE
Zut alors.
I am a vampire.
Neige is not my name. Nor are many of the things you may have been calling me. Whatever name I had one is gone now, now, lost with the language I spoke when I was human, a language whose existence we can account for only by the ghosts it leaves in the languages that follow it.
I am a fossil that lives and breathes. As long as I have done these things I have hoped for a change to come, and it has. Many times vampires have sought a way to live better. Our numbers are so few and so upon the fringes of society that it is hard to count these attempts, let alone confront the impact of them, but the weight of their failure resounds. In the eyes of every old vampire who has spent centuries in the shadows, and in those of the newly turned, learning they can never go home to the people they have always loved.
History has made monsters of us. Often, we have made monsters of ourselves. We are different from what we were before we are turned but those things, that central part of what makes something a person, it has not gone away. We think and feel. We know and learn and change.
We have something to offer. Vampires and humans can learn from each other and live side by side. The dangers we pose to one another exist only when we are living on the edge of a knife, when our tethers have been pulled so taut they are held together by only the barest strands. As vampires, we have accepted crumbs for so long that we have begun to forget what bread looks like.
Things can be better. I believe this. And I know they cannot change on their own. So we need your help.
How was this?
ALFIE
Pretty good actually.
NEIGE
You would change something?
ALFIE
Isn’t that the point?
NEIGE
Oui. I suppose it is.
[BEEP]
NEIGE
It would seem you have another message on your anonymous tip line.
ALFIE
You think it’s actually a message from another vampire this time, or…?
NEIGE
Eh, probably the same man again.
ALFIE
You’re probably right.
NEIGE
All this before you even put out your letter to the world…
